Fordyce spot is said to be a genetically linked disease but the major cause is idiopathic. This is not a contagious condition and neither is caused by some kind of virus. The papules are present in the child right from the birth; it’s only that they become prevalent only after a child reaches puberty.

Though doctors say that no treatment is required for this disease as they are not harmful, still one can use tretinoin cream or gel at the affected areas. This helps in reversing the condition with the time and prevents it from getting worse. Laser treatments are also available such as electro desiccation or CO2 laser. Doctors may also advice TCA chemical peels, but they are seen to return once the treatment is stopped. Success varies with the patient and also the condition of the disease. Positive results have been seen with the laser treatment. However, most doctors think that this is a part of physiological phenomenon thus they advice against treatment.
