Use of Mylar in Insulation
General February 22nd, 2009Mylar is a kind of plastic, which is been well known for its heat resistance and stiffness. It also helps in insulation of the material in the following ways
? It is been used as an electrical insulating object
? Insulation for tents and houses in cool environment, covering the internal wall with the metalized surface, hence reflecting the heat back in the space
? Insulation for tents and houses in warm environment, covering the external wall with the metalized surface, hence reflecting the heat away from the space
? Five coatings of metalized Mylar in the spacesuit of NASA make it radiation resistant to keep the body temperature of astronauts warm.
? Metalized Mylar blankets for emergency preserve the body heat of shock victim.
? It is also been used as a slim ribbon to make seal between control surface and adjacent structures of airplane, mainly gliders.
? It also insulates light in indoor gardening.
? Aluminized Mylar sheets are not been used as acoustic/ thermal insulation in airplane since Mylar sheet was been considered as a reason for major crash. The investigation of accident confirms that the layer of aluminum stops the Mylar from self-extinguishing.
